Bavarian digs
Under the creative direction of Jonathan Anderson, Loewe have re-orientated their retail stores into dynamic spaces that showcase the best talents in art and design, core constituents of the brand’s craft-centered identity. Their latest store unveiling in Munich is no exception, borrowing the same principles as Casa Loewe HQ in Madrid for a space that balances all aspects of the brand’s expansive repertoire.
Situated on Munich’s Maximilianstraße, in the heart of the city’s premier shopping district, the two-storey building plays with intimacy on a large-scale. Interspersed among Loewe’s men’s and women’s collections are paintings, sculpture, furniture and crafted objects, all produced either by local talent, established masters or past collaborators of the brand, including a number of former Craft Prize participants.
Utrecht recliners by renowned Dutch furniture designer Gerrit Thomas Rietveld sit on top of handwoven wool carpets by master weaver Jason Collingwood. Experimental works in clay, made by Japanese ceramicist and 2018 Craft Prize finalist, Takuro Kuwata (with whom Jonathan Anderson collaborated on the recent FW20 womenswear collection), are shown alongside fellow participants Ernst Gamperl and Joe Hogan, a woodturner and basket weaver who competed in the 2017 and 2018 editions respectively. Offering further transparency on Jonathan Anderson’s varied design inspirations, the space also includes eight portrait miniatures from between the 17th-19th century, the same that adorned the walls at Loewe’s FW19 show.
