Film

This quiet town ain’t so quiet
Get your weekend off to a good start by watching Antonio Campos’ new film The Devil All the Time. Set in the rural town of Knockemstiff, Ohio (that’s a real place, FYI) between the aftermath of WWII and the upcoming horror of Vietnam, we’re dropped into a world of bloody murders and evangelical preachers. Not your average family nostalgia trip, this multigenerational gothic noir takes us into the heartland of America with enough macabre, corruption and sinister goings-on to keep Cormac McCartney on the edge of his seat. Starring Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Harry Melling, Mia Wasikowska and Bill Skarsgård, there’s five great reasons to watch it already.

The Devil All the Time is available to stream on Netflix.

Art

Peeping toms
As part of a deep-dive into the act of looking and being seen, White Cube’s new online group exhibition pays tribute to Alfred Hitchock’s 1954 classic, Rear Window. Hitchock made no secret of his interest in voyeurism throughout his life and this film is arguably the point at which it reached fever pitch. Using themes from the film as a conceptual framework, the exhibition features work from numerous contemporary artists that deals with snap-shot insights into a private, domestic setting. From Jeff Wall’s erotic diptych to Carrie Mae Weems’ iconic Kitchen Table series, it’s certainly one to see.

Rear Window at White Cube can be viewed online for free from 13 November – 19 January 2021.

Gig

Ever visited virtual reality?
London band PVA may not be able to premiere their debut EP, Toner, in the traditional format – like, in front of actual people – however they’re all about silver linings and have decided to host their gig in virtual reality. Using tech developed by Volta-XR, we’re promised an event that  “opens up limitless possibilities of how we can present music as performance, entertainment and as a multi-sensory experience.” Sounds good, mixed with PVA’s genre-smashing music, this is going to be special.

PVA perform on 14th November at 13:00 and 15th at 22:00 – tickets here.

Film festival

Free films for all
Raindance Film Festival is the largest independent film festival in the UK and this year’s its free, online and available to all. Yes, with lockdown preventing us from heading to the cinemas, Raindance has uploaded its full line-up of exciting new indie flicks to the web. There’s the David Bowie biopic Stardust, Keith Bearden’s coming-of-age tale of teenage misfits, Antarctica, and Alexandra-Therese Keining’s The Average Color of the Universe, if you’re looking for something a little more deep and emotional. Plus in-conversations with everyone from Jude Law to Sally Hawkins.
