Aston Martin’s DBX is a bold new vision for the storied British marque, translating its signature aesthetic and ride into its debut SUV model. With this comes a cinematic campaign of equal ambition created by a Hollywood-standard cast. Directed by award-winning Italian director, Luca Guadagnino, starring Golden Globe-winning British actor Josh O’Connor, art direction by legendary British designer Peter Saville and featuring musical direction by acclaimed musician Devonté Hynes.

Filmed on location in sunny Sicily, footage captures Josh driving across the island’s stunning long-winding roads in his DBX. Cast in Luca’s signature dream-like filter, across vineyards, dirt roads and even freshwater lakes (Josh told us about his love of freshwater swimming in his HERO Winter Annual 2019 cover interview) Josh explores the island, highlighting the DBX’s aptitude for adventure. As for the car itself, it’s a major step for Aston Martin, interpreting the brand’s incredible style and torque to an all-wheel SUV that drives, feels and sounds like a sports car.

“We have created this movie in which we focus on a man and his mind, as well as his command of a car through a great landscape,” says Luca Guadagnino of the campaign. “It was wonderful how once Josh started to drive the Aston Martin DBX, the car somehow became this unique, beautiful sculptural object. His figure and line perfectly blend into the line of the car.”

O’Connor adds: “The thing that appealed to me first was that Aston Martin is a true British institution, a company that has been ever-present throughout my upbringing. I think the combination of the luxury of the brand, and the luxury of Luca’s vision is perfect and comes through in this very special film. There is a true sense of speed and there are no two ways about it, when you are in the DBX it feels like a true sports car.”

Speaking further about the film, Guadagnino says, “My films are always a beautiful interaction between me and the talented people I work with. We shot the film in May, and the DBX’s beautiful Minotaur Green finish created depth and shade against the Sicilian landscape, which I know so well. The DBX was almost like an Anish Kapoor sculpture, where reflections became very important.”
