Still, ‘Dune’ by Denis Villenevue, 2021

Dune has only been in cinemas for a week, yet director Denis Villeneuve has already received the green light from Legendary Entertainment and Warner Brothers for the second installment of his sci-fi remake starring Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, set for release in 2023.

The epic reimagining of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel of the same name has already crossed the $225 million threshold at the global box office – opening top in North America earning $41 million in ticket sales in the first weekend, while knocking No Time to Die off the number one spot in the UK – therefore it comes as little surprise that production companies want to strike while the iron is hot. Villeneuve’s intention was always to tell the story in two parts, the Canadian filmmaker tells of his ambitions: “It was a dream of mine to adapt Frank Herbert’s Dune and I have the fans, the cast, and crew, Legendary and Warner Bros. to thank for supporting this dream. This is only the beginning.” There’s plenty of the story left untouched in the first movie (no spoilers, don’t worry), and therefore the second instalment is set to follow Paul Atreides on his revengeful quest for power. In the meantime, we have two years to repeat watch the first chapter, again and again and again and again…
