Alongside his renowned photography, Ari Marcopoulos‘ prolific body of work consists of numerous zines created throughout his career – one of which, Chaos, features exclusively inside the pages of HEROINE. In his latest publication, the US photographer has compiled a selection of zines from his archive to provide unprecedented access into an essential part of his daily practice. Often self-published or created with independent publishers, the informal DIY nature of Marcopoulos’ zines function as everything at once – sketchbook, diary, stream of consciousness and documentation of his cultural milieu.

Appropriately titled Zines, the publication chronologically charts Marcopoulos’ incredible zine catalogue – from 2015 until today – showcasing never before seen images alongside some of his most recognisable. Offering an insight into the creative community, friend and family he surrounds himself with, portraits of the likes of Robert Frank, June Leaf, Hilton Als, and Kara Walker stand alongside travel snapshots and striking images of his Brooklyn neighbourhood in the midst of the global pandemic.
Alongside Marcopoulos’ retrospective, an interview with curator Hamza Walker underscores the essential role zines play in his artistic practice, while an essay from Maggie Nelson meditates on the work’s evolving position within a wider social and cultural context.
