Manchester-born singer-songwriter Pip Millett is turning over a new leaf with the release of her latest EP. Following on from the release of Tell Jimmy earlier this year, Tell Jimmy I’m Fine is a record that finds calm and strength in the turmoil of heartbreak. In her latest EP, Millett touches on the trials and trepidations of the early days of relationships, 21st-century dating and finding comfort in solitude, all told across lyrics that swing from the sultry to the satirical – echoing a vulnerability prevalent in Millett’s first EP released in 2018. Below, we asked the musician to walk us through five sources of inspiration that underpin her evolving sound and brought comfort or solace when creating Tell Jimmy I’m Fine.
The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill by Lauryn Hill
“This is one of those albums I remember being on in the car all the time growing up. It now feels so nostalgic in all the best ways.”
The Holiday dir. Nacy Meyers, 2006
“This film makes me feel calm and cosy. I love that it doesn’t feel like it’s aged at all since it came out. Whilst it’s a Christmas film I’m happy to watch it all year round.”
Still, The Holiday by Nancy Meyes, 2006
Home
“I’ve really made my house my own little peaceful and calm home. When it’s clean and tidy, I’m not sure there’s anywhere I feel more at peace.”
Brown Girls by Daphne Palasi Andreades, 2022
“I read this book last year and it really stuck with me. I love how it’s written. It feels fast-paced and refreshing.”
My friends and family
“Without my friends and family, there wouldn’t be much to write about. They’re a big part of my life and an inspiration for lots of what I do.”
