Designed in the Beaux-Arts architectural style by renowned architectural firm Rapp & Rapp and opened in 1927, Detoirt’s historic Leland Hotel Ballroom has been the stage for many extravagant and landmark events during the city’s petrol-fuelled heyday.

In 1983, the Ballroom became home to the Leland City Club, a goth-industrial venue that has hosted the likes of Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails and the Smashing Pumpkins and continues to be at the epicentre of Detroit’s alternative music scene – the Ballroom’s plaster may have cracked, but its gold opulence and cultural resonance remains. Recently, otherworldly LA synth duo Drab Majesty performed a headline gig alongside Detroit local Shigeto (featured inside our HERO 14 Detroit special). Regular HERO contributor Georgia Mitropoulos was there to document the silver-faced pair prior to the gig.
