Pamela Anderson’s acclaimed return
Gia Coppola’s The Last Showgirl arrives in UK cinemas this weekend, starring Pamela Anderson and Kiernan Shipka – who starred on the cover of Heroine 21. The film follows Gloria (Anderson), an ageing showgirl facing the impending closure of the revue she has been a part of for thirty years. The story is inspired by the real-life closure of the Jubilee! strip revue, one of Las Vegas’ longest-running shows, which held its final performance in 2016. Already receiving Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations, The Last Showgirl is garnering significant attention for Anderson’s acclaimed comeback performance.

The Last Showgirl is out in cinemas now, read our Heroine 21 cover interview between Gia Coppola and Kiernan Shipka here.

Exhibition

Leigh Bowery!
It doesn’t feel like an overstatement to say that Leigh Bowery was the most influential figure in London’s underground scene during the 80s and 90s. His outfits, which were so garish and so extravagant, have appeared on every fashion designer’s moodboard at some point in time. Now, at Tate Modern, a major new exhibition has opened dedicated entirely to Leigh Bowery, his life and influence. Featuring not just a myriad of his original pieces and photographs, the exhibition also gathers from the archives of his nearest and dearest, such as Sue Tilley, Princess Julia and Boy George, and includes a number of portraits of Bowery painted by Lucian Freud.

Leigh Bowery! runs at the Tate Modern from 27 February – 31 August, more info here

Wayne McGregor creates his darkest piece yet

This weekend at Sadler’s Wells, Wayne McGregor’s Deepstaria makes its UK premiere. Inspired by a species of jellyfish, the production uses Vantablack technology to immerse audiences in the darkest depths of the ocean and the farthest reaches of space. Collaborating with Oscar-winning sound designer Nicolas Becker and music producer LEXX, McGregor creates a continuously evolving sonic landscape. This piece continues his exploration of the human body’s connection to technology, pushing the boundaries of sensory experience.

Deepstaria runs at Sadler’s Wells until Sunday March 2nd, tickets can be bought here

Documentary

British icon
In a new documentary, filmmaker Lee Shulman has focused his camera on the legendary British photographer Martin Parr. Since the 1970s, Parr has been a leading figure in British documentary photography, becoming famous for his photobooks The Last Resort (1986) and The Cost of Living (1989) which introduced the world to his distinct vivid colour palette and unflinching focus. I Am Martin Parr is a rare insight into Parr’s world, both through his photography and his personal life. Before tuning in, read our interview with Lee Shulman here.

I Am Martin Parr is out in cinemas now.

Exhibtion

Take a look through Mick Jones’ stuff
Opening on Saturday, The Clash’s legendary guitarist Mick Jones has opened up his personal collection of 20th-century pop culture. Named The Rock & Roll Public Library, the incredible archive includes Mick’s home-recorded VHS tapes, books, comics, newspapers, a recreation of a 70s listening booth, and visual art installations. The exhibition will also launch issue 1 of The Rock & Roll Public Library’s new periodic magazine, which takes a deep dive through pop culture through Jones’ personal history. “The magazine to me is like a record,” said Jones, “with each article a separate track and it tells a story – my story. And by extension through our shared culture, all of our stories. I hope that anyone who reads it will enjoy it.”

The exhibition runs at Farsight Gallery, 4 Flitcroft Street between 1st-16th March.
