As Photo London returns to the capital for the second edition of its photography fair, clear your diary for some of the must-see exhibits spanning across the weekend. There’s a look into Warhol’s Studio 54 with an exclusive screening of Mapplethorpe: Look at Pictures; talks between artists (don’t miss Dieter Meier in conversation with Tom Hunter); and a series of unfiltered, untouched portraits curated by design duo Walter & Zoniel available for preview at the Victoria & Albert Museum. Tapping a plethora of diverse talents, be sure not to miss the weekend spectacle. With such a broad line-up we’ve sharpened it down into five key events…

Matt Stuart: The Magic Lantern Show
Street photographer Matt Stuart opens Photo London with a unique multi-media exhibition (the first of its kind in the subterranean space), situated beneath Somerset House and exclusive to the second edition. A sprawling exhibition space is dedicated to live music events, previews of Stuart’s work, and a visual exploration between music and photography. The Magic Lantern celebrates Stuart’s uncanny depicts of real-life situations (usually of London’s unfiltered underground scenes), and sees the work of Marina Sersale, Bredun Edwards and The Lurkers trickle through exhibit also. Running across the four-day period, make sure you stop by for an exciting, tongue-in-cheek surprise.

Walter & Zoniel: The Untouched
Innovative art duo Walter & Zoniel collaborate with the Victoria & Albert Museum and Photo London art fair for a series of 25 compromising images entitled ‘Iconic Britons.’ Each photograph (blown up to impressive life-size dynamics) captures the many different and iconic British figures throughout the years in a celebration of their work. By clever combinations of modern and ancient technology, Walter & Zoniel were able to hand-curate extra-large cameras for an immersive experience. You’ve got until May 22 to check it out.

Multifaceted performance artist and esteemed film-maker Dieter Meier sits down with London-based artist Tom Hunter in conversation about his work on May 20 at The National Portrait Gallery. Wolfgang Tillmans: Between Bridges
“Pictures are replacing words as messages,” says artist and Turner Prize winner Wolfgang Tillmus, whose exhibit Between Bridges previews at Somerset House’s Pavilion this year. Sparked with political references (and the kind you can recognise instantly), Tillmans work  has made him the one-in-a-generation artist that he is. “I feel that we have reached a critical moment that could prove to be a turning point for Europe as we know and enjoy it – one that might result in a cascade of problematic consequences and political fall-out….Brexit could effectively spell the end of the EU,” says Tillmus. 26 of his ready-to-print posters (famous for their witty and democratic messages) will go on display at this year’s Photo London.

Mapplethorpe: Look at Pictures screening
In its first screening, Mapplethorpe: Look at Pictures comes to Photo London on May 22. Rediscovered interviews of the 20th century artist are compiled by directors Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato for the feature-length film which celebrates his noted works. From portraits of flowers, explicitly sexual nudes, and people he encountered during his life, the screening unveils the works that garnered attention during the Manhattan of Warhol’s Factory: Studio 54.
