Island life
Footwear brand Camper have teamed up with Eckhaus Latta — the fashion label that flourished out of New York’s underground fashion scene – for a new shoe collaboration.
Founded by Mike Eckhaus and Zoe Latta, Eckhaus Latta is known for its unisex collections, diverse casting and experimental presentations. The duo’s artistic approach to running a fashion label set them on a steady trajectory to commercial success and earned them a spot on the Forbes 30 under 30 list. “We’ve always admired Camper for their material exploration and brand sensibility,” said the duo. “We were thrilled when they reached out to us to work together and our answer was an immediate yes.”
“We went through many ideas to get to this one. A lot was left on the cutting room floor so to speak. Camper was patient and supportive of us offering guidance, both aesthetic and technical when needed. In the end both parties are happy with the shoe.”
This collaboration sees the two brand’s realise a new knitted shoe, the concept for the shoe derived from Eckhaus and Latta’s long-standing interest in combining knitwear with footwear. “Knitwear is a core component to Eckhaus Latta. Creating a knitted shoe is something we have been interested in for years and personal experimentations in it pre-date us starting Eckhaus Latta. In collaborating with Camper we are able to realise concepts that were not physically feasible to us otherwise.”
To showcase the collection, Camper and Eckhaus Latta have released Island, a surreal short film directed by German filmmaker Alexa Karolinsk. Shot in Camper’s home town of Mallorca, the film stars model and actress Hari Nef and performance artist Martine Gutierriez, two of the label’s long-term collaborators. The film sees the duo partake in some eccentric activities; they crawl on all fours with shoes on their hands, harass local sheep, stomp on oranges but mostly appear seemingly nonchalant as they smoke cigarettes and drag themselves around the Island.
Camper Together with Eckhaus Latta is now available in selected Camper stores and camper.com.
