Dusk-til-Dawn

Peter Copping’s Lanvin debut was an ode to Paris nightlife

Lanvin returned to the Paris runway this season under the new artistic directorship of Peter Copping, formerly of Balenciaga couture. In the show notes, Copping wrote of the collection being deeply personal and described it as “an homage to Jeanne Lanvin’s world and her intimate sense of style.” It makes sense that to create a new beginning, Copping went back to the very start, and to the woman who started it all.

The collection exuded timeless sophistication, evoking the wardrobe of a Parisian night out. A co-ed collection, there was everything from couture-inspired dresses for women to cuffed blue jeans for men. These dresses, of which there were a vast number, ranged from sleek, fitted silhouettes to opulent opera dresses. Black velvets, crushed golds, 1920s lace, vivid florals, and intricate beading, there was a huge range of luscious materials that all looked painstakingly manipulated into these gowns.

For the men, their version of the dresses were the coats. Grand wool coats that trailed down to the ankle, fabulously loud cheetah prints, sophisticated herringbones and grey furs. It’s hard to look at this Lanvin collection and not feel embarrassingly underdressed. The house is in very good hands.
