Reality blur
An Italo Calvino quote, and one of the house’s core tenets, guided Massimo Giorgetti’s FW25 MSGM collection: “Lightness is not superficiality.” Looking to elevate through weightlessness – of fabrication and emotion – this season’s showspace in Milan’s Corvetto neighbourhood will soon become a new cultural hub and art gallery showcasing contemporary voices.
And Giorgetti’s collection did similar, referencing the work of Italian artist Alberonero, specifically his tulle installations, in which he decorates natural materials found in the local woods – such as trees and branches – in great sheets of delicate, coloured tulle, creating “suspended atmospheres between reality and dream,” read the show notes. Translated through the collection, layers and layers of tulle formed aura-like textures around individual garments crafted from eco-fur, fleece, scuba, and faux leather.
This season’s second collaboration was with textile artist Caterina Frongia, whose intricate geometric hand-crafted rugs contemporise traditional Italian tapestry. Frongia’s work was reimagined as bold all-over quote jacquard knitwear and graphic patterns illustrating jerseys and t-shirts.
Signature MSGM-isms remained: youthful, slouchy and undone tailoring, padded bomber jackets, sporty tracksuits, and pieces decorated in psych-acid florals, while a full eco-fur look (11) with hat was one furry face mask away from being a full bear suit.
