Sugar and Spice
S.S. Daley was a late but very welcome addition to the London FW25 schedule. A co-ed show, it saw Daley present his second collection of womenswear alongside his staple menswear looks. Taking place in LFW’s NEWGEN space, the soundtrack was a playlist of classic 80s British hits — West End Girls, Spellbound and Bigmouth Strikes Again.
The inspiration this season came from the Scottish Colourists, a group of four post-Impressionist painters who were active in the early 20th century. Deriving their styles from Cézanne and the Fauvist painters, the Scottish Colourists all shared a passion for big, bold colours and visible brushstrokes. Naturally, these facets translated well to Daley’s sartorial world, this collection being the second in a row taking inspiration directly from the world of art.
For the menswear, key codes such as the billowing trouser, found itself rendered in blue denim this season. His knitwear, as playful as ever, featured anthropomorphic characters – a sugar cube and a pepper mill – named Sugar and Spice. His roomy suits this time around were rendered in a check pattern reminiscent of red-white-blue bags.
For the womenswear, last season’s beaded aprons and pleated skirts found themselves reimagined, alongside floral dresses and embroidered shirt-and-short sets. A new silhouette debuted, bulbous dresses that bobbed along the runway like jellyfish. Perhaps the most significant aspect of the collection was the accessories. Handbags and shoulder bags that were either fully beaded, rendered in tartan, or covered in felt. Whilst on foot we saw new takes on Daley’s loafers and lace-ups.
The show concluded with a touching tribute to the late Marianne Faithfull with The Ballad of Lucy Jordan playing during the final walkthrough. “Marianne’s willingness to experiment and explore different genres of music, poetry and spoken word helped pave the way for other artists to push boundaries,” Daley stated in the show notes. A knitted jumper featuring the message ‘Stay Faithful to Marianne’ was a highlight — a heartfelt tribute to the woman who was central to the collection.
