Richard Nicoll is all about technical clothing; a utilitarian uniform for the take no prisoners man. Where FW14 was founded in an air of old things made new, SS15 heralds the individual – the younger brother not afraid to wear a pair of lace ups (albeit customised Vans) with a suit. Combined with a hedonistic New Romantics attitude, it’s this confidence that here rises.

“The idea of elegant utility and contextualisation of fabrics and elements is something I really like and come back to each season, I have been looking at the New Romantics and technical sport elements mixed with artisanal and hand done techniques for SS15.

I was thinking about the idea of normal and how to make something very generally accepted as the norm more personal and individual, I wanted to make a uniform for everyday life that refers to the accepted but also has its own voice, it’s a celebration of the individual in a gang. I’ve taken a conceptual and wearable approach to American basics, it’s very pared back and believable but innovative too. It’s about innovating the familiar.

I think my man is developing a strong personality in a very wearable context, my approach is exactly the same as when I started but I’m developing more creative and conceptual pieces to sit alongside the selling component like technical outerwear over wearable paper and hand tied Shibori shirting.”
