Dragons Unwinged at the Butchers Block

Paolo Carzana built purgatory in a London pub

For the past two seasons, Paolo Carzana has been penning a Trilogy of Hope – this season came the final chapter. Having shown in his Hackney home for SS25, the designer chose another intimate venue this season, inviting guests to The Holy Tavern, a 60-seater traditional London pub in Clerkenwell.

Titled Dragons Unwinged at the Butchers Block, the collection meditated on the liminality of purgatory, having explored the ascent to heaven in FW24’s Melanchronic Mountain and the depths of the underworld in SS25’s How to Attract Mosquitoes. The work of French 19th-century post-impressionist painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec lay at the centre of Carzana’s moodboard, crafting looks in fiery hues of oranges, pinks, purples and yellows. Built entirely by hand, garments were twisted into abstraction and draped across the body, appearing to come to life as models walked along the dimly lit alleyway and into the 18th-century pub. Aiming to redefine what we see as ‘commercial,’ Carzana once again delivered a collection that was singular in its vision and meticulous in its execution.
